Hello,
i had a power out during a defrag. i then ran a chkdsk to check the drive for corrupted files. this has been going for almost 48 hours now and has only reached 25%...
this is obviously not normal, can i simply turn it off? what would happen to the data on the drive?
it is a 500G drive with around 300 used
thanks

Your drive may be pretty messed up if power died during a defrag, if the checkdisk is running OK and is advancing, I'd let it finish. Are you getting any unusual noises coming from the hard-drive? Like it's re-scanning the same section over and over with the heads going back and forth?

Turning it off may not do anything, but may cause issues, it's really a case by case basis.

hi,
thanks for the suggestion...
the problem sort of fixed itself,
there was another power out the day after the post here
then i started checking the files on the drive and it all seems ok
i have checked about 60% so far and no sign of issues...
thanks,
