can I insert a 5300 or 4200 ddr2 240 pin dram into a slot that the computer says is a 6400?

Yes. If you already have RAM installed, and you are adding RAM, you may have to manually set the BIOS settings for the RAM to the lowest voltage, highest latencies, and lowest frequency of the slowest stick of RAM.
