Backup cd windows xp to windows 7 home full version

I have backup disk made from my Windows XP when living in another state. I now have a new Dell XP 8500 with Windows 7.
The backup is mostly my personal data, documents from Word, favorites, Family Tree documents.

Can someone tell me exactly how to download them into my new computer. I can understand instructions if given to me step by step.

Use the same program/method that created the backup to restore the files.

I am sorry, I forgot to mention that I did not make the backup disk myself. I can't afford to pay someone $100 or more just to come to my house and download them into my computer. I am sure that I can do it with instuctions. Thanks

Without knowing how the backup was made, no one here can tell you how to restore.
