I think my 50 Gb hard drive format isn't working properly?

My girlfriend tried filing my music on my 50 gig external hard drive, and a lot of the files wouldn't work, so I'm reformatting it (all of my songs are backed up on my iPod, I'd just rather have this hard drive working) and it's been 6 hours and it's at 1%... Is everything alright? I've tried quick format, it wont -allow- that, and it also wont let me switch the format type to exFat.

Last night I set it to format at midnight, and at 10 it was at 6%, but I tried quick format so I had to start again
