My external hard drive wont format

Hello,
I've just transferred my external hard drive to my laptop, the drive is showing up but when I check it it says the folder is empty. It is showing a percentae of used space when I check the available disc space. What can I do please?

Is it being assigned a drive letter? If not go into disk management, right click on it over the right area and assign it one, then the files will be available.
