after installing windows xp on hp pavallon labtop which had windows 7 cannot connect to internet

Sure, that is because XP does not know about your newer network hardware. You can try the HP website to see if they list an XP network driver, but most likely you will need to identify the hardware and search for a driver elsewhere.

Just curios: Why did you downgrade from Win7 to XP?
