Move to I7 Bad Company 2

Hello people , yesterday I fired up the Bad Company 2 beta and was really shocked at how demanding the game is. Even clocked to 3.8 I was still only avg 35-40 fps. In heavy action areas the FPS would drop as low as 18. I can really notice the instability in regards to the FPS.

I play at 1600x1200 on a 24". I tried with and without AA and filtering. Changing to medium quality I thought would net more performance but I only picked up about 4-5 fps. Really bothersome considering how expensive this 285 2gb was.

So , my question is , would I get better performance if I made the move to I7 ? I'm looking at the 920. If I were to purchase this CPU I would probably run 3.6, 3.8, 4.0. I just priced a new CPU/MB/Mem and I'm looking at around $650.00 to make the move. Of course I can sell my old stuff and apply it towards the new , but money really isn't too big of an issue.

I also thought about possibly dropping in a Q9650. This would run me around $300.00

Which option do you think would net the best performance ? Is the value of moving to I7 worth it ? This E8400 isn't cutting it.

Thanks in advance

that's what you get for buying a dual core. People in other forums are having dual core CPUs with 5970s being out performed by Quads with 4850s because CPU bottlenecks.

Here's a quote from another forum where they were discussing how to get BC2 to use all 4 cores

"Wow My FPS jump from 21-FPS to 45-FPS."

behold, the difference between dual and quad cores on that game.

another quote

"Yep it's the dual-core barrier. Game is borderline unplayable with anything less than a quad-core. I upgraded from a 3.0GHz dual core to a 3.0GHz quad core today and my framerates doubled. I'm now in between GPU and CPU limited[...]"

@ Aber : I was forced to reduce aa and filtering to 1 and all settings to medium. At that point I'm still hovering 30-45 FPS with dips as low as 18. 30-45 is playable but I was expecting to run this on high with a $400.00 video card.

Is my CPU holding me back ?

The main point of this thread was to get some feedback on what kind of performance increase ( if any ) I could expect going with an I7 920 or dropping in C2Q Q9650. I have googled quite a bit and looked at benchmarks but what I want is peoples opinions.

@ Pineapple : Hell yeah bro , the game play is insane. I can't wait for the official release. I will look around their forums at some point today.

Thanks for the reply bro. It seems you have answered that question. Now I will ask , should I just drop in a Q9650 or go I7 ? Money really isn't an issue but my wife already hates this computer and I would hate to drop another $600.00 on it. If the I7 will perform significantly better I will go that route though.

Thoughts ??

I7 $600.00 new build vs Q9650 drop-in $300.00

Sorry for opening a dead thread but I have another question.

While shopping around for the best deals on an I5 750 I came across someone selling new QX9650's for $320.00 with free shipping. These are new slan3 processors.

So , I can drop $320.00 on this extreme or a little over $500.00 for the I5 platform. Which do you think would perform better when gaming ? Even if the I5 edges out the CDQ is the price/perf worth it ? Both would be overclocked to 3.8+

Go with AMD. Best value for the hardware capabilities. It would be a cheap upgrade to get a MB/CPU. They still make Nforce motherboards so your Nvidia card won't be wasted.

Check out Toms hardware "best gaming cpu for the money Jan 2010" to see what I mean.

Dude , I appreciate the advice but I am looking to purchase one of the two processors I am comparing. What I am trying to gather is everyone's opinion on QX9650 ( Extreme ) for $320.00 vs. I7 for $550 +/-.
