How do motherboards lock the cpu pins in place?

It's so tiny I can't see what goes on when we move that metal/plastic bar next to the CPU socket.
What goes on after you install the CPU and lock it in place? How does it unlock back? Does the light turn off when we close the refrigerator door? lol
Are there tiny grips below the socket that keep the CPU pins in place?
Does the motherboard bend the pins in order to lock it? (I would not think this would be the answer as I think the bending/re-straightening would eventually break the pins)

It was fairly hard to find information on google as I kept getting computer "lock" ups and other non-related stuff. So I figured I would try here

When you move the lever a part of the socket shifts and locks on the pins like pliers. when you move it the other direction it opens up again.
