Hello, I'm thinking of upgrading my processor tonight, but stuck between these 2 the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz 1333 MHz LGA775 L2 6MB @ $152.77 or the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5GHz 1333 MHz LGA775 L2 4MB @ $139.77

I use my PC mostly for gaming
Any suggestions?

1. What is your current processor? What are the specs of your current system? (ie. GPU, PSU)
2. Where are you buying it from? Have you tried Newegg or Microcenter (usually cheaper places to get cpus)
3. What games will you be playing and at what resolution?

Anyways, the Q8300 would be a better deal if you're planning to overclock.

Well, the E8400 will be better for single or dual threaded applications as well as single or dual threaded games with its larger cache and higher clock speed, but for multitasking or multi-threaded apps, like video editing, DVD decoding or file compression, the Q8300 will be well faster.

As for overclocking, I'd have to disagree with BSOD, correct me if I'm wrong, but the Core 2 Quad Q8000 series don't o/c well - my classmate's Q8200 can't get past 3GHz stable, but it could be different with the Q8300, while the Core 2 Duo E8400 can o/c past 3.7GHz on air, past 3.4GHz or so I think on stock cooler.

1-GPU Asus 9600GT Top
-PSU I will probably upgrade that tonight aswell since this will be taking more power.
-RAM 4gb Patriot PC2-6400
2- I'm buying it from a store close to my place, so no wait for shipping and no shipping costs
3- Mostly playing Entropia Universe (Uses Crytek 2 Engine) some Fallout3 and some CoD: MW2
