New monitor problems

Hey I just bought an Asus Vh242H 24" Monitor and am having some problems with it.

I believe they're called artifacts but i'm not sure.
basically, when i start windows, and whenever i'm doing something, pixels in the deepest black colours will flicker/flash to a green colour lightning fast and repeatedly. there's no pattern or anything. i haven't tried it gaming or with movies yet, but even happening on a tiny black box on the screen its annoying. They always appear to happen on the same pixels. When the PC is off and the monitor is not, this does not happen

I just got this monitor today.

My system is:

Athlon II X4 620 OCd @ 3.151 GHz
4GB Corsair ddr2 800 ram @ 808MHz
Asus 9600GT
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H
Windows XP Home Ed.
Asus VH242H Monitor

Any advice as to what the problem is or how to fix it?

P.S.

switched to from hdmi to a dvi cable and problem is gone. likely the dvi-hdmi adapter on my vid card or the hdmi cable itself, thanks.
