I might be able to get a friend's hd 3870 from a Dell XPS system, but my computer isn't a Dell and I have a lanparty motherboard, so was just wondering whether the graphics card would be compatible with my motherboard as I heard that Dell use some proprietary components? Thanks in advance

It doesn't matter. It will fit with your motherboard.

non-integrated video cards don't have "motherboard loyalty" so to speak. so as long as you have the appropriate slot on your motherboard (which you undoubtedly have), you can put your friends video card in it.
