Microphone playback too low

Hello,
I have just installed a MS Life Cam VX3000 on my Acer Veriton 3300 pc to use on Skype. The camera has a built-in mike but I can barely hear myself on all playback tests.I get the same problem with every other webcams and with any stand-alone microphones. How can I dianose the problem? How can I check if my sound card is faulty? Please advise (Roman from Cranbourne,45km SE of Melbourne Australia, Sunday 11/4/10, 5.00am)
