Troble installing ram into gateway commercial computer

I currently have 512 mb of ram in my desktop. I bought 2 gig of pc3200 / 400 mhz ddr ram to install. Standard stuff I thought. The mother board is an 865g board and the gateway unit is from their business line so gateway doesn't service it any more. I install and the things beeps at me. There are four slots and from everything I've read it should handle 4 gig... any ideas?

Need more detail, you bought 2 gig is that 2 x 1gb, 1 x 2gb or 4 x 512 mb
Are you sure its ddr and not ddr2?
How is it installed, you've got the original 512mg in (2 x 256mb?) and added 2 sticks?
you removed the 512 and added just the 2gb?
How fast was / is the 512mb?
