XFX Radeon 4850 issues

I recently upgraded from a Radeon 3870 to the 4850. I uninstalled the original drivers and installed the new ones perfectly. It showed no signs of failing.

Once I started to play games (such as CoD:MW2 or Mass Effect 2) it would freeze after about 10 to 15 minutes. The screen would be frozen at whatever happened right when it crashed, and sound would then cut out after about 10 seconds, forcing me to restart.

I thought it might have been my PSU but when I checked it up, I found out it was 1000 watts (http://www.txcesssurplus.com/servlet/the-6253/Dell-XPS-730-Power/Detail).

I don't know anything about this motherboard (Model: 0UU795, Chipset: nForce 790i ultra SLI SPP)

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9450 2.66 Ghz. 4 gigs RAM DDR3.

It's in the correct slot and I plugged the cables to the power supply correctly. I'm running out of ideas here.

Any help would be appreciated.

Could you check temperatures while in Game (using a program like HWMonitor)?

Also, would it be possible to do a full reformat (or would that be too big of a hassle)?

And finally, could you try running 3Dmark06/Vantage and see if they complete successfully?

Those are two (rather large and stressful) GPU/Computer benchmarks.

In my experience, they often show Graphics Card instability quicker than most other games (while still in a gaming environment).
