Yes, you can. The best way to view your files on your laptop is to get a USB-to-hard drive adapter such as this one. It will work with most HDDs out there (unless your desktop uses SCSI HDDs, then you're out of luck). Connect the desktop's HDD to the adapter, the power brick to the HDD, and plug the USB cable into the laptop, and the desktop's HDD should show up as a removable disk on your desktop.

I have a similar adapter and it's great for emergency use. But for long term use, get a USB case. Just be sure that the USB case matches your drive interface.
