Hello, the screen on my acer desktop has stopped working, was wondering if i can plug my desktop hard drive into my compaq laptop and view my files that way?

Yes, you can. The best way to view your files on your laptop is to get a USB-to-hard drive adapter such as this one. It will work with most HDDs out there (unless your desktop uses SCSI HDDs, then you're out of luck). Connect the desktop's HDD to the adapter, the power brick to the HDD, and plug the USB cable into the laptop, and the desktop's HDD should show up as a removable disk on your desktop.

I have this exact unit and it was $20 very well spent.

Just get yourself an external casing for your Desktop's Hdd, and use it through USB, casings are much more trust worthy than converters\adapters. Check out the link -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817145133&cm_re=vantec_nexstar_3-_-17-145-133-_-Product
