Budget gaming build - suggestions welcome

Already have the following components:
Sapphire 4890 Toxic edition
LG Blu Ray Drive
Samsung DVD burner w/Lightscribe
Sony 26" Bravia HDTV 720p/1080i

Thinking about adding the following:
AMD Phenom x2 550 (91$ at newegg)
Stock cooler (0$)
GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 (65$ after MIR at newegg)
Antec Earthwatts 650 (80 @ newegg)
Antec 900 used from friend (40$)
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) (85$ newegg)

Notes: I hear this mobo can unlock the cores of the CPU, worth a shot
Only need 1 PCI Express 2.0, don't plan on crossfiring the 4890

Purpose: Gaming (90%), and some schoolwork (10%) I'm trying to build the system around the 4890. I did some research and this CPU seems sufficient, and better than my current setup (intel wolfdale e6300 / 4GB 1066 DDR2) which I'll part out and sell for $$ for this build

Budget: May consider the x3 720 CPU, nothing more expensive. The x3 720 is 105$ on newegg (OEM) and 120+tax at Microcenter (retail).

May consider an after market heatsink/fan, if you know of a good deal please share, tia. Something easy to setup is a plus, had problems w/ Artic freezer 7 pro.

  1. Hi.

    1- Change the CPU for the X4 620 or X4 630.
2- The M4A79XTD EVO is better mobo
3- Try to get a 5770 or 5850, in the moment are the best series.
3- What CL have the RAM?
  2. I disagree with the 5770 choice, the benchmarks for it are subpar. Already own a OC'd 4890, not considering the 5850 for maybe 5-10 fps more

Also disagree with the x4 620... only 2 MB of L2 cache where both the x2 550 and x3 720 have 6MB L3 cache. Like the fact their both black editions. Also not sold on a quad core, the only game I've seen where it would matter is GTA 4, and that game is overrated and then some

    Will look into the mobo

CL on RAM is 9... keep in mind I'm on a strict budget
  3. Just was an opinion and advices.

And IMO the 57xx and 58xx series are overpriced, i'm still running my games at 1920x1080 with a GTX260 an are really good.

The CL is very high, the better is CL7 or CL8
  4. no problem. yeah i would like faster RAM but 'fraid I can't afford it. hell maybe I'll change my mind, i do have a few extra dollars to blow
