I am completely baffled by how standby/hibernation works in Windows XP.
My notebook is properly set up for standby and hibernation. When the
machine is freshly booted, these two modes work fine. But over time,
after some repeated standby-hibernate-restore cycles, the notebook
simply won't go into standby mode anymore, even when there isn't any
application running. Forcing the notebook to go into either of these
modes from Start, or by pushing the power button (programmed to go to
hibernate) works without any problem.
Just to give some more info: To debug the problem, I tried programming
the power management to make the screen go blank and the notebook go
into standby after 15 minutes of idle time. At the end of the idle
period, the screen goes blank but the machine never goes into standby.
Does anyone know what's causing this behavior, and how I can find out
and fix the problem? This is becoming a really annoying problem for me
as a few times I left the computer running on battery and it got
competely drained.
