i tried installing SuSe 7.1 professional but when i got to the resolution configuration screen the installer didnt accept any resolution and i had to choose "no X11 configuration" or something like that to continue the installation.
After the install i got at a prompt, like DOS thing. So i am a total newbie in Linux and i am lost trying to find something in the 400 page manual to help me load a graphic "windows-like" environment. Can anyone help me and write some commands to configure the geforce 3-resolution and finally load graphic interface?

Help me please.... :)

Righty ho then. here's what you need...

I'm assuming that you have the XFree86 rpms installed, just not configured. You can find out by logging in and typing 'rpm -q XFree86' and see if it's there... If it is installed, then try 'startx' at the prompt. If you get a screen full of errors, then we're good to go. If you get a command not found type of error, then you need to get the CD's out and install some more XFree86 packages.

Basically, you need to set up the following things in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file (use 'pico' or 'vi' to edit it): Mouse, Keyboard, Card, Monitor, Screen, and Server.

Have a look at the file with 'less', see if you can make some sense of it, and if not, post it here. I'll take a look, and post the changes that need to be made.

The driver should probably be 'nv' and the colour depth may need to be 24 bit, not 32 bit. Check that the monitor frequencies match your monitor.

Suse also has an update for the X server here:

NVIDIA has drivers on there website for Linux, and has a good manual to go with it. These drivers will be a good thing for your card.
