Want to play GTA IV with much better graphics (max if possible)

Hi.

I've started playing GTA IV, the game is awesome but its no fun at all playing on my current configuration:-

Gigabyte ES2L Motherboard 2.6 Ghz
1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon X1650 256 MB Video Card.

I want to upgrade it so I can play the game smoothly, and if possible, on maximum settings coz it looks awesome...

My budget is around a 100 dollars... any and all suggestions welcome...

I've tried researching a bit, but its too confusing... which is better, ATI Radeon of Nvidia Geforce? Are Geforce 9600GT and Radeon 4670 good cards? I've read 4350 is ***...

I was also thinking about increasing my RAM to 2 GB.

Thanks and cheers...

More about want play graphics possible
  1. for that money, you wont be playing the game on max. its a resource hog.

but if you can stretch the budget a little to 150 bucks for a ati 5770, you should be able to play the game fairly well.
  2. There is one graphics card who will be able to run GTA 4 in high setting is Sapphire HD 4870 2 GO GDDR-5 vapor-x
  3. do u mean I can play fairly well after spending 150? so how much would I have to spend (and on what card) if I want to play with max settings?
  4. what processor do you have? and at what resolution o you game?

its unlikely you will be able to play at MAX, since the game is an awful port that bogs down even high end systems.

but, a radeon 5770 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131328&cm_re=5770-_-14-131-328-_-Product) would allow you you to raise the grpahics settings pretty high.

you will likely still be processor bottlenecked though. the game really needs a quad core.
  5. Pentium R Dual Core E5300 2.6 GHz

How will an ATI Radeon 4850 1 GB work for the game?
  6. I have 4890 vipor -x OC 2GB and e8400 oc to 3,6 and i can't play it on max. I am playing at 1680x1080
  7. Can you overclock? That E5300 can get up to 3.5 without breaking a sweat. That will improve your speed a lot for only the cost of a new CPU fan (~$30). I would look at a 5770, its a little slower than the 4870, but it has DX11 support. It will be a massive improvement over what you have.
  8. Your can check this article here. GTA IV is hard on pretty much all aspects: CPU, RAM, GPU and VRAM. If you upgrade your GPU, your CPU might become the bottleneck, etc ...
  9. Unfortunately, if you want to play GTA IV in all it's glory then either buy a PS3 or Xbox 360. The game is a very poor port to PC which is why it is a system/resource hog.

I'm not interested in the game myself, but when I read reviews there were a lot of complaints about how poorly the game runs on a PC. For example, one person had an overclocked qual core CPU and a OC'ed 8800GTX as well; when standing still he got at most 20fps. Of course I don't his graphics settings, but still...
  10. The game is a very inefficient port but I wouldn't say it's a "bad" port, as in the game is just better on the consoles. Having played both I can say they are basically the same, graphics may be slightly better on pc, probably mostly due to higher resolutions.
That said it is one of the most intensive games around because it is so poorly coded. It's very cpu intensive so you will want to OC that processor(it OCs easily and well) or replace it with a quad. That plus something like an HD5770 should let you play it on fairly high setting although how well it will play depends on your resolution which you haven't mentioned yet.
Your current card is quite weak by today's standards FYI. Even if you can't afford an HD5770 something half the price like an HD4670 would still be well over twice as powerful as the x1650.
  11. thanks guys... i play with 1440 by 900 resolution... can u tell me if a radeon 4850 will work very well for this game with my resolution? and how about a radeon 4890? is it better than 4850?

    cheers...
  12. yes the 4890 is a fair bit better than the 4850.

with a 4890, at that resolution, you should be able to get the game running very well at high settings.
  13. and with 4850? same resolution...
coz 4890 is a bit out of my budget, around 200...
  14. a 4850 should do well, but i don't think it will max the game out at reasonable framerates.

i don;t have any experience in GTA4 with a 4850, but my 4890 was unable to max it out at 1920x1080p. given the drop in resolution, i think it could max it out, but a 4850 is a weaker card. it would certianly not be a bad experience though. you may simply need to lower a few settings.
  15. Get an HD5770. It's in between the HD4850 and HD4890, both in performance and price, but it is newer, DX11 compatible and much more power efficient. It should do very well with GTA4 at your resolution and any other game really. This is a good deal;

  16. i had a 4850 1gb when i was still playing @ 1440x900. and no, you cant max out GTA4 with 1gb VRAM.

thing is, my VRAm consumption if remember correctly was around 800-900mb, anything closer to 1gb resulted on some random crashes.

also, the patches are important, you might be able to squeeze 5-10fps extra just by adding the latest patch.

    why not look @ 1gb 4870?

The HD5770 gives similar performance while using much less power and costing less.
  18. PS3 is your best solution TBH :D
  19. Here's a clip of GTA 4 on my system.
    I'd say it runs alright:

There is 1000 on Graphic resources.
I have everything maxxed except view Distance which is at 38
    with resolution at 1440x900
  20. thanks magneezo... what graphic card do u use? and how many fps do u get?

    I've got a BFG GTS 250 OC on an Athlon IIx2 235e.
It gets the job done but of course you can have many more flavors that are newer that will give a better bang for buck overall.
I myself am satisfied for the timebeing.

  22. I think you need to add at least another 2G of ram, 1g ram will be unplayable even you have an i7+5970. Second, if you can upgrade to a Quad core CPU, it will be the best, but given your bugged, you should try to OC ur CPU as high as possible, > 3.6G if you can. Now after that, you can consider upgrade ur video card, a 5770, gtx 260, 4870 1g or better would be ideal, but I think given ur system, 4850 1g is also fine (as long as it is 1g version), ur CPU is going to limit ur frame rate anyway.

  23. thanks guys!

i just bought ATI Radeon HD4850 1 GB and was able to play the game at max settings... (1440x900 resolution) view distance also 100.

The graphics are awesome... BUT the game seems to lag sometimes, and the terrain doesn't load that quick... like, the buildings and trees and *** would be loading AS I AM driving through... which just ruins it all... i dont know if there is a fix for this, like a mod or something, or is it just coz of my 1 GB RAM...

    what do u think?
  24. ^ did you patched it up?
  25. now is this everything maxed including draw distance and AA, if so you need a gpu with >1GB vram (everything mas is what, 1.5GB vram)
  26. YOU NEED A QUAD CORE TO RUN GTA 4 ABOVE 40 FRAMES PER SECOND.

Even a Core 2 Duo 8500 only gets 3X frames.

  28. @wheresmycar: no dude, i havent... do i have to download some mod or something which can fix this lag?

@mindless728... well yeah everything maxed out including view distance... and it comes to around 800 mb, i thought it wud be 1.5 vram too but apparently at this resolution (1440X900) it comes to only 800...

i dont really know the fps im getting... i dont even know where to look for it.. tried searching in settings and googling it but cant find out, is there a software or something?
  29. download 'fraps'

it will display your framerate in realtime.
  30. my 9800GT+Phenom II 955BE oc to 3.8GHz gives me 30-34 Fps AVg at all settings to high and View distance to 40

i am going to upgrade me gpu to 5870 1GB

expecting 30 to 40 fps more in that
  31. several tests show -(on high settings)

    view dist - 30

    with a 9800gt

a dual core pc 2.8GHZ gives only 8-12 fps
    a core 2 duo 2.7Ghz gives 16-20 fps
    a Quad core 2.66Ghz gives 26-28 fps
a quad core overclocked to 3.8Ghz gives 32-36 fps
  32. ok so i checked i get very high fps inside but like only 12-20 outside... i think its coz of my dual core 2.6... im thinking abt overclocking it... how much should i overclock it to? i dont wanna do any damage...
  33. and should i overclock by BIOS or software?
  34. ho ho ho ho you wont see much of difference in overclocking a dual core
but a max of 2.8 Ghz is not very destructive.but you will need a quality 500W smps for
    minimum OC

overclocking a 2.6 ghz dual core is not good upgrade to a quad core 2.66 or phenom II 3Ghz

yeah, at 1080p is quite a bit higher
  36. alright the game is running pretty smooth when its daytime in the game... but at night it sucks... it doesn't lag but the environment doesn't load and a lot of times I'm just floating, no roads, trees... but it doesn't lag... a bit in the daytime too but almost none, not noticeable... how do i solve this problem? its driving me crazy... wanna play this game so bad...
  37. can it be run on Max in a XFX 9800 Gt 512 mb ?

also..... can XFX 9800 Gt 512 mb be run on a 450 W Power supply?

no, you probably won;t be able to max it with a 9800gt.

what brand PSU do you have?
  39. I have an Iball 450 W Psu...............
  40. its tough. in theory, that PSU should just about be enough to power a 9800gt.

but its a very crappy brand PSU, so i would not recommend pushing it to the limit, for fear of burning it (or something else) out.

id grab a better PSU like a corsair vx550 first.

  42. its not really about what games you play.

the problem is that its a very low quality PSU, so if its unable to supply the system you may experience system lockups or shutdowns. or worse, the SPU coudl fail and damage some other component.

if you want a new GPU, id recommend getting a new PSU first.

do need to upgrade the monitor?
  44. maybe you should start a new thread mate?

don't mean to be rude, but it seems you have a few questions. and startng your own thread would get the answered quickly. if you want me to help out, just send me a PM.

Hey Magneezo, you should invest in a driver ed course. heh heh
