dear all,

i would be really greatful if i could get some advice on whether i can upgrade the processor in my system and if so what processors might be compatible. ideally i would like to put a quad core in but if its no possible then so be it.

i have done a lot of googling and spent a long time on the phone with dell. the googling suggests it may be possible. dell have recommended that it isn't and i should consider buying a new system. here's the specs

DIMENSION 9200

current processor ... E6600 dual core 2.4 ghz

Memory Dual-Channel 4096MB [4x1024] 667MHz DDR2

motherboard : i think the model no is E210882. dell tech support said the ref was 1394A

if it is possible, is it jus a case of swapping the processor out or would i need to change jumpers/flash bios etc?

if there's any of detials i can look out just let me know. all help much appreciated!

thanks,

CB.

You have a computer manufactured by a company. This means there will be not bios update available as they would rather you just bought another computer.

You will need to go to the dell site and determine the most powerful CPU that comes with your model. That is your guaranteed upgrade.

If you want to take a risk, check the chipset CPU support. It is unlikely, however possible that it will support a newer CPU. But there is no way of knowing except by trying.

If you have any problems, let me know and I'll see what I can find.

hi Enzo and thanks for your help.

the Dimension 9200 is no longer on Dell's site unfortunately.

however, when i spec'd the machine i remember considering the same model but with a q6600 processor, which is what i'm considering upgrading too ... ie a processor of the same era, and even same clock speed, just double the cores.

i have googled 'dimension 9200 q6600' and given the number of second hand machines, the D9200 was certainly available with a quad core processor.

i guess the question is whether they used the same motherboard? this is what i'm struggling with.

i posted this on Dell's community and got an encouraging response here ...

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/p/19330718/19690809.aspx#19690809

your thoughts on determining what motherboard i have and whether it would take a Q6600 would be much appreciated!

thanks again,

CB.

I looked thru a few forum post and found that there are a few people that have the Q6600 in them so it should work just make sure you have the latest bios installed and you should be fine.

thanks guys, seems to be a goer! just compared two 2 chips on the intel site and they seem similar. will post the html below .. apologies if it doesn't translate well.

only differences that jump out are

Max TDP 105 W 65 W
TCASE 62.2°C 60.1°C

thanks again
