What are you going to be using it for? Also are you just upgrading the cpu or the whole system?

if your just doing moderate gaming, web browsing, or word document Core i3 would be better.

If your doing heavy gaming, redering, video editing, Cad, ect. Core 2 quad would be better.

Although, the Core 2's (duo and quads) are EOL and Core I's (I3, I5, and I7) have taken there place.

So unless you just doing a cpu upgrade on a current motherboard, it will be much wiser to save up the money for a new Intel Core I"x" system or an AMD Phenom II or Athlon II system.

Hi newcomer and welcome to the Tom's hardware forum.

You can't compare a dual core against a quad core, the i3 is 32nm, the q8300 is 45nm.

If you want a better reply, the correct comparative will be the i5 or i7 vs q8300

No, i build new computer and need me only for games, internet and maybe movies
To now i have:
-Graphic card - Ati Radeon MSI R5770 Hawk 1Gb Twin Frozn II
-HDD 500Gb WD 7200rpm Sata2 32Mb cash (Caviar Green)
-RAM Kingston DDR3 4GB (2+2gb) 1333MHz, Latencia CL9, ValueRAM
-DVD-RW LG
-22" LG W2243S-PF (Analog with only VGA connector) i make big mistake with this monitor
And now i look for CPU (Core 2 Quad Q8300 or Core i3). For socket 775 i think to buy "MSI P45-M51" look how solid motherboard.
Thx for sugestions...........

The Core i3 chips use the LGA 1156 socket. You can't use an i3 chip in an LGA 775 motherboard. You should forget about using LGA 775 for a new build since it's a dead socket. You should get an LGA 1156 motherboard and an i3 or i5 CPU IMO.

My choice would be the I3-540 - Lower Power consumption/less heat
And a side benny - If you go with the H55/H57 MBs you can use the integreated grafics should your GPU fail - NOT great for gaming, but you can still use the computer..
For internet, email and watching movies, you would not see any difference. The "true" quad cores (the I3s are dual core/4 threads) are better at rendering Video, but unless you spend a fair amount of time EDITTING video files, I would not use this as a deal breaker.

Here is a comparison;
General usage

For Games

And one from Anandtech

When looking at performance remember A difference needs to be >10% to be noticeable.

To Saint19 - It is acceptable to cross compare - Your looking at which is most cost effective verse performance.

Ok, for that rig I would go for a i5-750 or i7-860 (if your budget is enough)

Can you RAM the monitor? a good monitor with HDMI or DVI will be great.

Maybe a 5850 is a better option.

Concur the i5-750 is Better than the i3-540 in terms of performance and worth the increased cost.

Proc I3-540 - $120. The I7-750 - $200.
MB A good H55 (I3/I5/I7) is arround $120, Better is the P55 for $30->$50 More.

Upside/down side. I5-750 + P55 MB, about $120 More than I3-540. Would almost cover that New Monitor Saint19 suggested. I5-750 Higher performance. I3-540 includes IGP on die w/Processor which the H55/I5-750 does not have. Added - One downside for the H55/57 MBs are no SLI or Xfire.

In that case..The i3 would be better for lightly-threaded apps and games. Now if you play GTA IV or ARMA..a true quad (q8300)would be better.
HOW DID THIS THREAD GET BUMPED?????HOLY NECRO-BUMP BATMANN!!! :o
