Is that an onboard sound card?

I really don't know a lot a out sound cards, but I didn't know if my motherboard (actually I'm looking at two, one for an Intel processor and one for an AMD) had onboard sound or if I needed a separate card. The reason I'm asking is because I see the places on the motherboard where speakers, etc. can be plugged in, but I don't know if that means the board has sound, or those are just the connection spots. Here are my motherboards:
ASUS P6TD Deluxe
M4A79T Deluxe

All motherboards these days come with onboard sound The Intel board has an ADI chip and the AMD board has a Realtek chip. I think ADI is a little better then Realtek but it still is onboard sound and if you are an audiophile you will not be happy with onboard sound.

  2. I would like the sound for normal computer use sounds and perhaps listening to some music. Not a lot of noise, but I still want it to work. Do you think it will work fine? Maybe I should get it and if I'm not happy with the quality I could buy a sound card later?
  3. That's exactly what I'd do. The on-board sound works just fine for most normal users. Like you said, if you're not happy with the quality you can always add a sound card later. My guess is the on-board sound will work just fine for you.
