External HDD not functioning

Hi all, my external HD suddenly stopped working! When i plug it into my PC, the led light isnt shining and neither is there any movement on my PC.

Can I say that the HD is broken and gone?

I would say that the enclosure is probably dead, or the power supply.
If it is not under warranty, you can open it up and hook it up to your computer, and it should work that way.

If it works, you can either leave it in there as a second drive, or buyanother usb enclosure to put the hard drive inside the new enclosure.

I didnt get to see the internal of the ext HD. I suppose it's nothing like the normal sata HD or whatever HD we uses in our desktop PC right?

How do I hook it up btw?

It should be the same. What make and model?
Is it under warranty? If it is NOT under warranty, opening it won't hurt it.

Western D, quite small in size. That's why im wondering whether it will fit my PC or not. No idea what model it is, but it's passed the warranty. It doesnt hurt, but im afraid that i can't put it back after.

Usually it is just 4 screws or so and not hard at all to take apart and put back together. Regardless, it is not working as it is.
It should have a model number on the bottom or the back of the unit, not the power supply.

Okay, so i just have to remove the cover. What does it look like internally? Foxconn & sata ports available inside?

I don't know how old it is, but it should be a SATA or an IDE hard drive.
But yes, it you hjust have to remove the cover and disonnect it from the sata or ide connector inside the case.

Alright, so as for normal IDE hard drive, i understand that there will be manual small jumper to be placed on the pins, do sata drive needs it too? I assume the hard drive is quite new, and should be sata capable. WD1200BEVS is the model no. i saw on the HD's particular strip.

No jumpers on SATA drives.

You just need a sata data cable to hook it up to your pc inside.
You will be able to bracket it inside unless you buy a bracket.
It should be okay inside a drive bay as long as you don't move the pc around.

Cool beans. The drive is okay I am certain, it is just the little usb board that is part of the hard drive enclosure that is bad, or the power supply.

Btw, that usb board, if i were to change, is it possible for me to get them outside? The exact same model so that i can replace it and refit it into the casing. If the board were to be faulty, i think either the power supply or the usb connector wont work.

Not the same one, but they do sell 2.5 inch enclosures on newegg.com with power supplies and such.

Do it today....it should only take you about ten minutes at most to unattach and hook it up to your computer.
