I am about to buy a DVD reader for mij Toshiba Satelite Pro 4600.
At this moment it contains a CD-reader.
Does anybody know how to remove the CD-player?

First, if you are going to replace the drive, get a combination DVD/CD
burner (reads DVDs, reads and burns CDs), not just a DVD-ROM drive.
The "official" procedure is pretty horrible, you split the case open,
separating the LCD from the base, it's major disassembly, lots of work.
But it MIGHT be possible to remove all of the necessary screws and
slide the unit out simply by removing the keyboard. Can't be sure, have
not worked on one of those models.

Hm...sounds horrible indeed...
And why do you advise a writer; i only need a reader. Or a the readers not
as good readers as the writers?

The DVD/CDRW combo drives are more versatile than the plain DVD-only
drives, and they are not much more expensive. If you ever wish to back
up your data, you won't have to transfer it to another computer that has
the CDRW, you can do it straight from your laptop.

If you are going to be replacing the drive anyway, the cost DIFFERENCE
between a reader only and a combo drive won't be that great, it will
dramatically increase the value of the laptop, and you never know when,
your current needs not withstanding, you yourself will need that
capability. Remember, modern PCs -- both laptops and desktops -- don't
have floppy drives. If you need to make a boot disk, it needs to be a
CD (I realize that the 4600, an older laptop, does have a floppy, but
sometimes you use one PC as a tool when working on another).
Also, you should read the posts about the "IDE #1 Error" (the thread is
titles "Replaced DVD-ROM for combo" ), you stand a very good chance of
running into that problem as well (the problem has nothing to do with
being a combo drive, but rather the master/slave configuration that
Toshiba expects, vs. the fact that most drives are setup for cable select).
