How can i go into a dos screen when my screen wont work

Hello,
I am trying to fix a laptop with no display. I have plugged a monitor to the laptop and get a username and password screen that bI dont have. All the solutions are to change boot sequence to boot from cd but I can see anything on my screen.

Did you press the correct key sequence that will switch from internal to external display?

Just exactly what that sequence is varies from one machine to another. Check the manual for details.
