Which is more powerful?

I get that the first number (Xxxx) is the series... and in this case, the 4890 is obviously more powerful... but what about, say... the 4850 vs 5770? or the 4650 vs 4730?

Aside from the first number... do you just look at what the bigger number is when compairing two cards?

Solution
The lack of 1 GB RAM only hurts at highest of the resolutions.
i.e. at 2500x1600

You'll absolutly love 4650.
Get the cheapest one.
Its worth every penny you give for it

5770 roughly performs similar to 4870 and 260
4890 performs similar to 275

4890 is an extremely good choice at $200.

However,
If you are going to buy 5770, Go ahead you are making the right choice for the good performance upto 1920x1200

If you are looking for 4890, I suggest you should wait a couple of weeks,
5830 is said to be priced near $200, performing similar to 4890 and 275 but adding DirectX11 and Shader Model 5.0

No. We look at benchmarks, not numbers. Numbers can be misleading, as nVidia or ATI showed us. Check benchmarks from reputable sites like: Guru3d, Techpowerup, Anandtech.
When you want to check how fast is a card compared to another just do a google search like this: '<insert name of card here> Review'.
In your case the hierarchy is: 4890>5770>4850 raw performance.

If you're content with 1080p HD any one of those cards will do, so, though the 4890 is more powerful the 5770 has more features consumes less power and is cheaper when bought new (not to mention dx 11).

Anyways, i sold my last gfx card and now i have money again, so... while im looking for what new gfx card to buy... I just picked up an xfx 4650 1gb from best buy for $100, just in the mean time, to play mw2... until i figure out what im going to get and i order and get it... only then will I return my wildly overpriced 4650... but, much to my suprise... it plays mw2 great! So I looked on newegg and found a powercolor 4650 512mb for $30 (after MIR).

My question is... will the powercolor 4650 with half the ram run as well as the xfx? How much is 512 mb of ram going to effect it? Do the cards differ much depending on the manufacturer?

Basically, if i can get away with a 30 card playing modern warfare 2.... ill be very happy!

Good find jyjjy. The 4670 is better than the 4650 and that will show up in games.
