I'm thinking about unlocking the x2 550 or 555... is it worth it? or should I buy the athlon x4 instead

purely for games get the x2 555.. for general purpose computing with games i'd get the athlon x4 630...

ok now the phenom II 555 overclocks better thats the prime reason to unlock it.

so for 3.2 GHZ you could take it to 3.6GHz with no problem!

oC your Cpu can give 10-15% more performance

the anthlonX4 gives only a small amount of increase

Its really quite stupid not to overclock it the BE processors are meant to be overclocked thats the whole point of it. The only difference between a BE and none BE is the multiplier being unlocked I dont know who wouldnt want to take advantage of a 15% boost in performance for free. As far as benchmarks look at a Phenom II x4 it is the same processor as the x2 when it is unlocked.
