Hi i just bought a ati 5850 and i only jumped by 1k from a gtx 260 none 216 core oc at 640,1440,2300 on 3dmark06

My main setup is m3a78
Amd x4 955 be oc to 3.4
4gb 1066
thermalake 850 psu

with the gtx i was geting like 17124 3dmark06

with the ati 5850 i get like 18234 3dmark06

Does that seem right or if i'm bottlenecking something some were.

I was hopeing for something up in the near 20k area
And i benchmarked crysis i only get like 8-10 more fps over the

At 1024-768 on high setings everything else off.

I was thinking sence the drivers are not the greatest atm that its killing the fps or something. But i do plan on over clock the 5850 if its worth it. I just do not see the price worth out of the 5850 just for a few more fps.

More about : benchmark

This THG comparison chart http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card,... suggests that the 5850 is only a 1-tier improvement over the 260 GTX, so I'm not surprised that you only saw a marginal increase in your score.

I doubt that you've got a bottleneck on your system. The article linked also mentions that they don't recommend upgrading unless you go 3 tiers higher, so that would have you only upgrading from a 260 GTX to a 5970. Which, of course, would be overkill at your resolution.

O ok i was just hopeing i would get more out of it but i do have a 22in (Samsung 2233SW) wide screen on its way and was going a res like 1680x1050 witch i hope is wide screen. Been useing pur vga monitor for like forever lcd ones. I plan on over clocking some i just saw more of a gain in fps in the charts of about 20+ so i said sure why not. I do plan on going more to the windows 7 area in terms of dx10 games that are comeing out like bio 2 and so forth. I was thinking i did not jump to much up but i did not want to pay the uber prices in terms of the higher cards. I know i should of waited and stuff but i said hell with it. Well atleast i can give the gtx to my other computer and do a semi lan party sence i can crank stuff out on max setings on every thing well almost lol. O well whats done is done. 10 fps is 10 fps more smoother any was. Once i get more money i wanted to do CF and see what happens but after the 5850 prices come down more. Just wondering if i wasted 100 bucks to upgrade in terms of the gtx 260 price lol. HDMi is a plus to :)  But the lcd does not but i have a nice tv for that part.

I keep a spreadsheet of every PC I've ever built and the 3DMark scores (06 and Vantage once it became available). I've got an X4 965BE overclocked to 3.78 with a 5770 and it'll push 16,778 on 06, and my old Q9650 OC'd to 3.6GHz and the 5850 will push 19,369. My current i7 920 OC'd to 3.46 with the 5850 is hitting 21,664. Can you push the 5850 further? Yes...but probably not with the X4 you have just based on clock-for-clock performance of a Q9650 versus a 965BE if they were both at 3.6GHz. I'd say your score is pretty close to where it should be and with some overclocking to 3.7 or 3.8, you might be able to get a hair over 19,000 but 20K might be tough with that combination. I wouldn't worry - you're right where you should be. You'd probably need a clock on the X4 to get closer to 4.0 or 4.1 to hit 20K.

Meh, I wouldn't worry about it. In Crysis, 8-10 more FPS is huge :D . Worrying about the score in a synthetic benchmark isn't as important as being able to play a game at the settings you want. You will be better able to appreciate the upgrade once DX11 games roll out.

I know scores are scores. I just wanted to be able to play games at a good fps on a 22" widescreen with near max setings with the new monitor i'm geting. I just wanted a monitor that no longer had vga I just do not want to take a major fps hit in terms going down to slideshow terms :) . Pluss i think my gtx 260 was dieing any was lol. Some times the comp turned on and booted but the card did not come on tell i turned it off then back on and i have used other cards and its been fine. I tested the the psu and it was fine. But now i have it in my second comp. With the athlon x2 6400. Aka my old setup. Atleast i was able to play most of my games on max setings ;)  with the 5850 and when the drivers get better then more the :)  i well become. Well atleast i'm were i shoould be at interms of price power ratio and like i said before i may go cf in the near future with a pair of 5850. But well see what happens here in a few months.

I just uped my amd to 3.7 and now i have a 3d mark score of 19048 3DMarks so thats better lol thats like another 1k jump. But sadly my amd is idleing at 36 from 33 at 3.4. i have not prime tested it but well soon. I have a after market cooler the zelman CNPS9500A LED i mean it works and stuff but sence i have a mid tower case like i idiot i bought the stupied xion case so only a 80mm fan is blowing the hot air out the back near the cpu lol i have added other fans and so forth but hey i had to work with what i got but atleast the case glows in the dark :)  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... . I have the thermalake thought power so atleats i did something right. Thanks again for the info and stuff.
