NAS Webserver Disappears

My 250gb Simpleshare NAS has developed a problem where the webserver ceases to operate, i.e., it is not possible to address the NAS in a browser internally or remotely. While this is happening LAN access to the storage is still viable.

If I turn off the drive and let it spin down, then restart the drive, web access will come back up and last anywhere from a few hours to a day. I believe this is a linux box using Samba to share the drive over local IP. What could be causing the webserver to stop operation?

A whole bunch of stuff, frankly. It's as broad as asking "what's make my [whatever] program crash?"


My first thought is that the http daemon is hanging, so... have you tried restarting the http daemon? (It's a linux-based device, so the service should be called "httpd") And have you tried updating the device with the latest BIOS, firmware and software patches? I know the Simpleshare devices had a lot of early problems, some of which got addressed by patches.

They also have overheating issues, so it might be helpful to see if you can make it behave by moving it to a well ventilated, cool, dark spot, and/or pointing a fan to blow air over it and keep the unit cooler.

Well, this unit is used an awful lot and this firmware allows disk spindown so I don't think heat is an issue. Even when the unit's website goes away it remains available as a network device my side of the firewall. Why would I be able to restart the http daemon by turning the unit off then on? It doesn't lose its IP.
