Presario R3000 bricked after BIOS update

I work for a computer repair shop and someone brought in a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop with an overheating issue. It was assumed that one of the fans was dead, but they both tested good when hooked up to a power supply, and my electronics-savvy friend/guru informed me that they weren't necessarily intended to always run at the same time and that the manufacturers often issue BIOS updates with better fan algorithms to prevent overheating. I downloaded and attempted to install the BIOS update, everything looked fine and then it restarted but I just get a blank screen. The BIOS flash program said it made a backup of the old BIOS, so I'm wondering if there is some kind of BIOS recovery mode.
