Should I purchase a sound card or use on-board sound components?

Hi Guys.
This is the first time I’m using Toms Hardware.
Can someone please help me determining if a sound card is a worthwhile investment! I have just purchased the Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 Speaker System, which i do have to mention is awesome. I am currently using the on-board sound controller on my ASUS P6T motherboard. I don’t have much knowledge when it comes to sound cards because i have always used on-board sound controller.

Would i notice a massive improvement by purchasing a good sound card? At the moment I use my PC for listening to music, watching movies and playing games.

Any advice would be grateful.

Thank you for taking the time to read this tread.

Thanks SAAIELLO.
Great insight into sound cards.
Based on what was mentioned I will be purchasing one. Can someone please recommend me a sound card that I will not be disappointed with?

Those are a few of my favorites and will give you some really nice sound.

The HT OMEGA striker would be my choice.

This is an interesting thread.... I figured the onboard audio was just as good but I suppose I was wrong.

What if you are just using a headset, or headphones? Will the audio differ greatly as well?
