I just got a 8320 and im currently having issues trying to OC this thing. Specs:
ASRock 990FX Extreme3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
Patriot Viper 3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model PV38G160C9K
XFX P1-850X-XXB9 850W ATX12V 2.2 & ESP12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active ...
AMD FX-8320 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.0GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8320FRHKBOX
Whenever i try to OC anything over stock, the system will lockup after 5 minutes to 10 hours. Im shooting for 4ghz for now until i get better cooling, currently have a 212 Evo. Under IBT and prime cores never go over 58 up to 4.4 with 1.425 core LLC Disabled. I have tried Multi only, and Multi and bus with downclocking the ram and it will not get stable. Will pass all the stress tests, but will lockup. It also keeps throttling under load around 55C core, 60 package, and i drops down to a 7.0 multi for 10 seconds, then kicks back up. Using BIOS to overclock, and it doesnt matter if I turn off all the power saving (C6, C&Q) ect. This is my first amd rig, and any help would be great with this thing, my 2500k was mindlessly easy to OC, and I am enjoying the challenge but i cant even get a small OC
try to disable AMD cool'N'quiet, and other power saving features in the BIOS and OS. Your cooler should also be giving you better temperatures so make sure you have more airflow in your case, and make sure it is set properly on the CPU. The power saving features are whats more than likely throttling your CPU.
I tried all that as well, and no matter what it will downclock. Swapped the board with a Asus Crosshair V Formula Z and that seems to have cleared everything up. Im wondering if the ASRock was downclocking due to the 4+1 not being able to handle the 8320 once overclocked. The case is Antec twelve hundred V3 with all fan slots filled and running 100% so i dont think airflow was the issue and the 212 was reseated with Gelid GC3 and runs 2 fans in push/pull.
