Laptop no saving WEP Key

Hello,
I have a new router and have been trying to get my laptop with Windows XP to save the WEP Key. Seems everytime I enter the number and then go back to properties to recheck the number is different. Any help would be appreciated

Where in XP can you see the security key is different to the one you put in? All you see in Preferred Networks?Properties is a string of asterisks and the ability to hid or display it didn't come along until Vista was a kid!

Use the correct key to connect to the network just once and XP stores it in Preferred Networks and automatically connects whenever it "sees" that network.

I can tell it is different because there are not enough characters in the Key
