Overclocked x3 425 cooling questions

Hey guys,

I am building a computer around the amd x3 425. If I decide to overclock it, will I need a new cooler? Also, I believe (from articles I have read) that this cpu comes with thermal compound already on the chip. Will I need a better quality thermal compound if I overclock?

I'm new to all this, thanks for your help.

the thermal compound comes applied to the heat sink

if you keep the 425 to 3.3ghz or under, the stock HSF is fine. The 425 runs fairly cool.

Thank you guys. I got the 425 as it was recommended to me for a gaming system in the $800-$900 range under the "home built system" sub forum. Will I see a noticeable different in overclocking this cpu? Or is it not really worth messing with...

an OC 425 is a fine gaming CPU, as for noticeable difference it would depend on the rest of your system. Getting the 425 to 3.0ghz is very easy even on the stock HSF.

425 is very good too. Take it to 3GHz without raising the voltage and check your temperatures.

My other "main" components are:

GIGABYTE GA-790XTA-UD4 AM3 AMD 790X SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
SAPPHIRE 100282-3SR Radeon HD 5850 (Cypress Pro) 1GB 256-bit DDR5

Thanks for your suggestions so far.

then OC the 425 to 3.0ghz+ would be a good idea

I would even look into the 435 or 440, the 435 is less then $10 more then the 425. All three CPUs OC very well.

Well the 425 has already shipped from newegg..... oh well. Will wiping off the mfg thermal paste and applying third party paste benefit me in anyway?

I use Antec silver, i think it dropped my temps on my 435 by 2-3c from the stock stuff. So unless you plan to really push the 425, the stock compound is fine.
