My trusty 2-year old TP X24 has developed a hinge problem:
After making funny noises for a couple of weeks, the other day, as I was
closing the case, it just popped out of the plastic enclosure, and now it
is stuck in a semi-open position.
Is this a simple problem to solve (by an experienced repair shop)?

So, the hinges have broken, at least it sounds like that from your
description and they are rather flimsy parts in my opinion on the X20
series.
This is probably covered by warranty so you should use that if you can.
Otherwise, the hinges are rather cheap to replace, or at least for the X20
that's the case. I just looked on the IBM service parts site and apparently
a replacement set of hinges will set to you back $342 : )
Looks like you might have to call to order replacement hinges instead of
getting them online. Funny thing though, the hinges for the X20 (not
compatible with the X24) cost only $25. Although when I bought some for my
X20, they cost nearer to $15?
The part number for the X24's hinges is 26P9825.
A repair shop probably does this sort of thing quite often, but it can be
done quite easily with the help of the hardware maintenance manual.
All you have to do is remove the keyboard followed by the plastic hinge
covers, then remove the remains of the original hinges, unplug the LCD from
the mainboard. Remove the three plastic screw covers from the bottom of the
LCD front bezel, take off the screws, slide the front bezel down and replace
the hinges.
