We have a new magny-core from AMD and the motherboard is TYAN S8230GM4NR.

The question is what is the best configuration for RAM? It is stated in the MB that memory channel is quad (Memory channel 4 Channels per CPU).

So what is recommended? 8x4GB or 16x2GB?

Assuming you are populating the motherboard with 2 physical cpu's, either 8x4GB of 16x2GB will give you quad channel memory on two physical cpu's with that motherboard.

Price aside, going with 8x4GB (one DIMM per channel, per physical cpu) is a better way to go; it will also keep the other memory slots open for future memory upgrades.

Welcome Newcomer! :)

The best choice is bank_1 4 X __GB and bank_2 4 X __GB; "stuffing" maxing out/filling all channels degrades overall efficiency. For a full spec'd system use Certified DDR - http://www.tyan.com/support_download_memory.aspx?model=...

Therefore, if 32GB is the target then 8 X 4GB is the ideal choice.

Good Luck on your Build!
