Network Home Backup machine

Hey guys. Would really appreciate some help here. My situation is: I have built a home file server/backup machine. Its an Atom dual processor, with 2gb of ram, and a 1.5tb hard disk.

My needs are:
Ability to do automated backups of laptops and pcs in the house to the server.
Ability to do on demand (as in log into web interface or something and say "backup now") backups
Ability to access backed up files on server: so files stored as network accessible files, rather than one massive encrypted blob.
Ability to stream media files off the pc.
Ability to access files through ftp, when away from the LAN

That's pretty much it. I don't need multiple full backups of each machine, just one current one.

Thoughts appreciated. At the moment I have a blank pc, and a copy of ubuntu server and windows server on disc. I need your recommendations to get further.

  1. Well, you've read off the spec for Windows Home Server :). I use it and really like it. It really integrates well with Windows 7 clients and W7MC. It's pretty much been set and forget in the last year+ I've used it.

servers are linux domain for a reason...
    use the ubuntu server.
  3. Check out amahi
    http://www.amahi.org/features/gallery

    requires fedora 10
  4. I have tried ubuntu server. Don't really want to spend more money on the Windows version. Amahi doesn't have integrated automated backup, does it? Don't want it host based, but automated.

So I'm trying to get BackupPC working - getting a nice error...

    * Starting backuppc...
    20101 $Conf{NmbLookupPath} = '/user/bin/nmblookup' is not a valid executable program.
invoke-rc.d: initscript backuppc, action "start" failed.
    dpkg: error processing backuppc (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    backuppc
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpg returned an error code (1)
  5. This is the root problem:
    /user/bin/nmblookup

Either the program -- nmblookup -- does not exist, the user permissions are wrong, or it's not an executable program (it hasn't been marked as executable via chmod command).

    Does it exist?
    ls -l /user/bin/nmblookup

Does it have execute privilege? Do you see an 'x' when you do a long listing with the above command?

If it's not executable, you can make it so with this command:
    sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/nmblookup

Can the account that is starting backuppc run the nmblookup program now?

  6. It doesn't exist. I can't work out how to install it either. any ideas?

I think its part of samba... not sure tho

    Bless,
    Chris
  7. Did you install the samba package?

    sudo apt-get install samba

    https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguide/C/samba-fileserver.html
  8. verified, it is part of samba..
    run vaneki's command from console.
OT, don't use ubuntu, does the ubuntu server has any gui by default?
  9. yeh i already installed samba. ubuntu server doesn't have gui, but i installed xfce

    Got the following error messages:

Your MPM seems to be threaded. Selecting cgid instead of cgi.
    Module cgid already enabled
    * Starting backuppc... 2010-02-13 19:30:47 $Conf{NmbLookupPath} = '/usr/bin/nmblookup' is not a valid executable program
invoke-rc.d: initscript backuppc, action "start" failed.
    dpkg: error processing backuppc (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    backuppc
  10. i got those errors when installing smaba, not when trying to load backuppc again or anything
  11. I'm guessing you installed things in reverse order. First you installed backuppc and then you tried to install samba. You need to keep the backuppc process from starting.
A couple ways of doing that are shown here,
    http://embraceubuntu.com/2005/09/09/removing-or-editing-a-startup-script/
  12. Okay, should i purge backuppc, purge samba, then install samba then backuppc?

Could it just be moved to the Linux software discussion? Thanks!
  13. Yeah, it's probably easiest to just remove packages and start over.
And, yes, it's probably better to move this thread to a more appropriate forum.

    sudo apt-get remove backuppc

    http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-apt-get.en.html
  14. Frustratingly have just removed it all, and samba installed fine this time, then installed backup pc and got the same error:

    2010-02-13 20:43:15 $Conf{NmbLookupPath} = '/usr/bin/nmblookup' is not a valid executable program
invoke-rc.d: initscript backuppc, action "start" failed.
    dpkg: error processing backuppc (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    backuppc
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

When I check ls -l /user/bin/nmblookup it still doesn't exist either!

    Chris
  15. aha one sec lets make that usr. nope, still not there
  16. Time to find a network support forum.
  17. thanks for the help you did give. if you wanna pitch in, have moved over to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8821824#post8821824
