Hi I just bought a Asus P6X58D-E Motherboard came with the i7 950 CPU already installed and overclocked to 3.8GHz
I want to no is there anyway of updating the Bios before I install The Operating System or do
I have to install it first then download the latest Bios from the Asus website ?
I do not want to lose the overclock settings don’t really feel confident to overclock myself.

More about : updating bios installing

If you're 950 is already installed and working properly and overclocked then there's no reason to update the BIOS. Upgrading BIOS is not the easiest thing to do, and could be pretty risk should you misstep anywhere. The main reason anyone would need to do it is if a component (probably cpu) came out that was compatible w/ your motherboard, but not recognized by your current BIOS. Since you don't fit either one of those, you really have no reason to update your BIOS (if there even is an update). Just install your OS and you should be good to go, no BIOS updating or tweaking needed!

Only update the BIOS if you have to. You stand a chance of bricking the motherboard if the update goes wrong so why take the chance.

Yep. The only reason to upgrade the BIOS is if you know it will solve a particular problem that you have or add a feature that you need.

hi there
i have to agree with the majority of replys... when you buy motherboard bundles like yours they have allready been configured for immediate use and this includes any bios updates that may be needed
and bios updates are only required when the cpu,s are not recognized by the motherboards... this is more common on AMD based boards were the am2/am2+ and am3 are universally compatible.... however since the socket 1366 is less than 18 months old there will probally only be one update avalible which has allready been applied
if your worried about losing the pre-configured overclock details then you should back up your bios ... however the retailer may of supplied recovery media that may have the settings on .... contact asus for support
install the os straight away and then if everything runs ok just enjoy.... bios updates are only required for 1. when instructed by asus ... or 2. to support new features that are released
any problems let me know
good luck !
