Upgrading motherboard tomorrow, can't decide between an AMD 785 motherboard and a 790FX mobo, the price difference between the two is negligible and both can unlock my 4th core on my X3 720 BE proc. The difference is that one requires I purchase DDR3 RAM, 4GB of which will cost ~$100. Is it worth it to upgrade to ddr3 on an AMD motherboard?

did you just say that the price difference between a 785G board and a 790FX board was negligible? You are looking at very different quality boards then, which two are you looking at? There is very little performance difference between DDR2 and DDR3 so dont upgrade just for DDR3 however the features included on an 790FX board are very different from those on a 785G. Post the two boards you are looking at for us to help.

If you dun need CF i would actually suggest a known low cost OC/unlock 770 chipset like the Gigabyte 770T-UD3P

However since your AM3 chip's IMC allows it to run on both DDR2 and DDR3, i would just hold out and hit the 880G/890GX/890FX next refresh for the AM3 socket chipset come April-June this year hehe It has native SATA 3 supports, uodated Advanced Clock Calibration (could make unlocking idiot proof hehe) and am curious how Fusion is implemented here
