Radeon HD 4870 running very inconsistant fps

Hi I play Counter-Strike: Source and I have a Radeon HD 4870 with the newest driver, and it still runs very inconsistant my fps ranges from 20 - 140. I can't figure out whats happening. My setting aren't even set to max.

REsoultion: 1280 x 720
Aspect Ratio : 16: 9
Model Detail: Low
Texture Detail: Low
Shatter Detail: Low
Water detail: simple
Shadow detail: low
Color correction: Enable
Antialiasing: none
Filter mode: Trilinear
Wait for vertical sync: Disable
High dynamic range: None


Can some one tell me whats going on with my gpu? Or help me to make it mor consistant? Thanks for all your help!

With that card, graphics details and resolution, the most likely culprits are the CPU, drivers or PSU.

What's the rest of your system like?

Also to the best of my knowledge everything is up today including my mobo as far as drivers go

I don't have Counter strike to know if that is poor performance, but I'd expect that it is.

I'd check in your device manager and look for anything not working properly or conflicts.

Try turning all of those settings up to high and see if you FPS suffers or stays about the same.

That is odd as CS:S is not that difficult a game to run seeing as how old it is.

What happens when you run it at max settings?

its fluctuating still , low is around 60 - and high is around 120.

Well that is normal. Turn on v-sync or set the fps_max or max_fps command to more suitable ceiling.

The lows were what was concerning with it being 20fps but if you are getting 60fps low then that is fine enough.
