IBM do some very nice, lightweight laptops.
They are also well built - however IBM seem to go over the top on
the friction-hinge setting so they nearly all break their hinges eventually.
Easy to adjust the hinges on IBM - it's a simple friction hinge, and the
sole bad thing to say about most of the thinkpads really.
Dell also do a thin-lightweight laptop.
If you need to lug the laptop about, weight *is* important.
You may, however, want to consider having 2 laptop PSU bricks,
one for the home and one for the office for example - they're heavy.
Buying them at the same time as the laptop can be cheaper than later.

While I am seldom less than awed by your knowledge as evidenced by your
posts to the NGs, in this instance I have to take exception to your
statement.
In the hundreds of Thinkpads I've handled over the past several years I have
yet to have seen a case of broken hinges that were not the result of
operator error! The only exceptions to my statement would be some 240 series
machines and some Acer built 300 series machines which had known hinge/case
problems.

It seems you have answered your own
question.
I am not aware of any 15" laptops
under 6 lbs.
But if you're willing to live with
a 14" SXGA+ screen (1400 x 1050)
the Panasonic Y-2 is a wonderful
system that only weighs a smidgen
over 4 lbs.

Thanks all for your replies.
I went to the IBM website and was only able to find a 32 MB lap tops.
Nothing in the 64 and up.
The Y-2 is more expensive than I had in mind. I'm looking at closer to
1500-1700 USD.
Yes I'd be willing to compromise on the screen size and go down to a 14" if
it helps me stay under the 6 lbs.
I may call IMB and ask if they make a 64 + MB laptop.

Some of the IBM T42 laptops come
with 64MB or even 128MB video, but
they would be more expensive than
the price range you mentioned. I
doubt 64MB video is available in
this price range.

Yes, operator's use too much force :-)
o IBMs tend to use stiffer shells on most machines (not all)
o Users like to "clamshut clunk" the lid down (using it in portable mode)
I should add, by "hinge" I as much mean the plastic case *around* the hinge:
o Right from 365X laptops, cosmetic stress cracks developed around the hinge
o So more specifically, the hinge doesn't break, the casing can develop stress cracks
If hinges are stiff, some users seem to try to use momentum/speed to overcome it,
but Thinkpad plastic tends to be a harder plastic than most other machines. That is
not a bad thing, it helps reduce flexion and so PCB flexion re solder-balls etc.
Yes it's pretty difficult to break a laptop hinge, but Thinkpads often have stress
cracks around the hinge area. Thinkpad at that price & spec will be tough tho,
but if spending that much it's certainly a maker to look at as reliability is good.

The T41P and T42P models have what you want, but like Dan said they cost
around $2500.
The Dell Inspiron 600M comes with 64MB (I have one), but all the ones on
their web site lately have 32MB. There are usually several on their refurb
site with 64MB. If you get one of the older P-M processors (1.4 or 1.5 Mhz)
and not too much memory, you can probably get a refurb 600M within your
budget. If you want the latest processor and lots of memory, it will be the
same as the IBM.

LG Markets some vey interesting lightweight laptops in Asia.
AFAICS, they are not available in the US or Europe. I picked
up one in Dubai. Very reasonably priced too.
