Hello everybody!
I'm trying to find the best pieces to assembly at a buget price, a good gaming PC that I'm planning to Overclock.
My goal is to play HL2 mods and L4D2 on high spec, on a 1920 x 1080 monitor.

I already have the hard-disks, the case, and I can buy 2nd hand PSU and 2gb ddr2 sticks dirty cheap. as well as additional heat sinks for the OC.

So I just need a CPU a Mobo and a VGA.

I have mainly 2 ideas

AM2 system:

Quote:
DFI LANPARTY DK 790GX-M2RS AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail USD$103
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor Model HDZ940XCJ4DGI - OEM USD$ 148
HIS H577FM1GD Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Retail USD$158
+ 4 GB ddr2 (2x2GB) USD$35

TOTAL USD$ 444

OR

AM3 system (so that I need to buy brand new rams at full price..)

Quote:
MSI 770-G45 AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail USD$ 82
AMD Athlon II X3 425 Rana 2.7GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Processor Model ADX425WFGIBOX - Retail USD$ 75
(OR AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor - Retail USD$ 95)
HIS H577FM1GD Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Retail USD$ 158
CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C8 - Retail USD$ 100

TOTAL USD$ 415-435

Both systems have 2 x16PCI-e that will allow me to upgrade with an additional VGA easily..
the DFI seems to be the top for OC and combined with the Phenom black edition, I expect it to be more powerful than the AM3 system .. that's way more relevant than the ddr3 advantage I think ...

I leave it to your experience guys, what do you think?
Which one is better, can you advise other configs? Maybe Intel someone? thx :bounce:

Either one is good, but note with the am3 build, that mobos 2nd pcie16 slot will actually only run at x4 speed. Either build will achieve your goal of hl2 and l4d2 at high settings. AM3 will be more future proofed though.
Personally id go with AM3 build and upgrade the mobo to a 790x chipset one

Intel cant compete in this price range

haha yea, so go ahead and spend 20$ more on the mobo for a 790x/fx/gx board and go with the am3 build, you wont be disappointed

how does this one sound?

MSI 790X-G45 AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail USD$ 95

I'm undecided about the processor(I will replace the heat sink if present):

Quote:
- AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition Heka 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Processor Model HDZ720WFK3DGI - OEM USD$ 102

OR

- AMD Athlon II X3 435 Rana 2.9GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Processor Model ADX435WFGIBOX - Retail USD $ 85

Are they very different? x3 Athlon vs x3 Phenom core?

... I'm trying to save on the CPU cause even the weak one should be enough for now, expecially with OC, then I will replace it with a high end am3 when the prices will go down...

Go with this one, 10$ more but has support for much higher speed ram, and gigabyte generally better brand then MSI.

And difference between the CPUs is that the athlon has no L3 cache

Comparison there

Either would be good for OCing, the gigabyte has one more sata port and one more pcie1x slot if that matters to you... id go with a gigabyte board
