First time overclock

Hi there,

With the arrival of Windows 7 tommorrow, I will have finished my first build. I have a 2500k processor, which I have a couple of questions about overclocking.

1. What's the safest temperature it can run at before it dies a fiery death?
2. If this temperature is exceeded, will I recieve any warning of impending fiery death?
3. Whats the greatest overclock I can do with the stock cooler?
4. Whats the greatest overclock I can do with a cheapish cooler, say a 212+ evo?

The answers to any of these questions will be greatly appreciated. :)

Many thanks,

Ollie

More about first time overclock
  1. 1. I would try to keep it under 75 C for long term stress testing
    2. You will get thermal shutdown if it exceeds 100 C
    3. I'd say about 3.8-4 ghz
    4. 4.4-4.6 possibly
  2. I agree, keep it under 75. Although don't use a stock cooler. Get a Cooler Master hyper 212 plus. It's inexpensive and will do the job. I had one on my girlfriend's 2500k before I switched to closed loop liquid. Got it up to 4.4, and stayed under 75 degrees in prime 95.
  3. Thanks! Will that thermal shutdown damage my system?

no, it will throttle the cpu down before any dmg is done.
