Front panel mic jack borked.

For whatever reason my microphone will not pick up sound, like its permanently muted. However its getting picked up by the system fine when I plug it in. I've tried uninstalling drivers and updating them from the web, re installing the ones on the mobo cd, absolutely nothing.

Just re-install the driver with different version and see.

I had this problem and I had to set the front panel to AC 97 mode in the BIOS instead of HD Audio.

When you say getting picked up by the system I assume you mean it's registering that you've got something plugged in?

On the Windows microphone properties page, go to the levels tab. Not sure if the Realtek control panel has separate volume controls to the windows one, but it's worth checking I guess?

Have you got another microphone you're able to use to test if it's the actual mic that's the issue?
Also, have you tried using the rear mic port?
