Should I drop down to 2GB to allow for upgrades in other areas?
DDR2 RAM

I know that a bigger platter size would be ideal, if it can fit in the budget.

Looks like I may be stuck using the stock PSU, which should suffice right?

More about build
  1. at that price range and for those uses 2gb is more than enough I have a laptop for those uses and it have 2gb of ram and for that it's more than enough, so go for 2gb save money and go for a 500gb HD. As the computer doesn't even have a GPU 300w is probably fine as long as it's a quality PSU. DDR3 ram is cheaper than ddr2 bur the motherboard is more expensive so it's a kind of a trade, so try to get a am3 motherboard and 2gb of ddr3. And the rest looks good

Take a look at this combo
  2. Thank you for your suggestions. I switched to AM3 with 2GB of DDR3 and a bigger HDD. Anything else?

Is this case better than the Rosewill?

  3. None of them are actually that great, but you won't find anything very good at those size specifications, but between those two the rosewill is better.

If you're able to get something bigger try to fit a antec 300 on the budget or a cooler master 690
