i reinstalled xp home with sp2 this weekend, and after the install, the
network card (or a new linksys card) won't work. using the command prompt,
it won't renew the the ip settings, giving the error message of "an operation
was attempted on something that is not a socket". i can configure the tcp/ip
values manually to get the computer onto my home network, but no access to
the cable modem and the internet. another anpmply is that the node type
comes up as "unknown" when all my other machines are listed as hybrid. even
the microsoft tech didn't know how to help me. i'm stuck!

What else did you install besides XP and the NIC drivers?

This sounds like a McAfee firewall problem.

nothing else installed at the time, and there is no hardware firewall in the
system. the xp firewall is disabled too.
