Right now I have my 6870 overclocked to 990mhz gpu and 1200mhz memory clock speed I have my fan at 98% and am running black ops to everything to the highest 4x AA smoothly at 54fps minimum avg 58 should I tone it down a little or do you think this is a good oc achievement

I would back off running any OC that requires the fan to be at 98%. I generally have my 6870 set so that the fan speed increases more or less in equal step with the temperature of the GPU. I don't have it get near 100% until the card is at 60c. I can promise you that the fan will wear out before the card does in the best scenario I see here.

Not sure which brand card you have or what the stock clocks were precisely, but I notice no real benefit from going past 1100 with the memory. All it does is tend to make it really hard to get a stable core speed with reasonable voltage.

Those are nice clock numbers and performance; I just wouldn't risk frying the card if you are pushing the sort of power I imagine would be needed.

I have a 6850 and I have mine OC'd to 935/1100. I havnt seen any any gains from pushing the memory any more than that so you should drop it to 1100 and see if your temps drop enough for you to be able to push the core more.
