Can't re-install windows xp

i think i got a virus, so i used my xp installation cd to re-install xp, but i get this error:

ohci1394.sys is corrupt.

a virus can't cause that, right? doesn't ths message refer to a file on the cd itself?

coud it be that the cd is scratched (i see some scratches and smudges, even after i tried to clean it)? i've done this procedure multiple times with this cd, so not sure what is going wrong.

if it is a scratched cd, is there a way to get another copy without paying, since i have the key? got it from dell and they want me to pay for another disc.

also the disc is sp2, and my hard drive had been updated to sp3. not sure why that matters on a clean install tho.

thanks.
