It's been a while since I've built my own system. But, I'm looking to spend no more than $550 on a quad-core system and neither Dell nor HP seem to be pricing their systems that low. I found this customized system on eWiz (http://www.ewiz.com/system_conf.php?preid=84). I am not a gamer, so don't need great graphics. I am a programmer, running virtual machines (via Virtual Box), so need pretty decent performance.

The specs below totaled $558.35 with shipping (yes, that's more than $550, but I'm good).

Just wondering if anyone has any advice/recommendations/comments.

1) Should I purchase extra case fans?

2) Do I need thermal paste, fans, etc. for the CPU?

3) Doesn't look like the ports on the MB will fit the back of the case...is this an issue?

Thanks in advance!

I would swap the PSU for a known good unit like the EA380 from antec, its a far newer and more efficient design than the thermaltake

Since you are going to be programming and not gaming you can skip the GPU all together and just use the IGP on the 785G chipset.

As for your questions, my antec 300 keeps my 955 and 4850 fairly cool with the two stock fans set to medium so you shouldnt need any extras, the 955 comes with a heatsink and fan so you wont need anything extra for it, the motherboard comes with its own backpanel, you just pop out the one that came in the case and put on the one that came with the board and it will fit.

If you really want to cut corners to save some $$ you can opt for the AMD ® Phenom II X2 550 (3100MHZ) , I recon this is a sweet deal ! But its kinda like playing the lottery with allot better odds of winning cause matched with the right motherboard you can unlock the 2 locked cores , but there is a possibility of it not being stable afterwards but from my research there was a lot higher success rate than failure. If all 4 cores are happy presto you just bought yourself the cheapest quad core CPU on the block ,

oh and the AMD Phenom II X2 555 might be even better value for money

I would buy it :)
