I use a JumpDrive to transfer information from my laptop to other computers
and am concerned about security of it's data from prying eyes. I am looking
for some type of privacy software, either to hide or a simple password
protection would do for folders that would be appropriate for use
on a JumpDrive USB data device. Because it would be moved from computer to
computer it could not require any software on the hard drive.

I don't know how secure it actually is, but back in 1999, I downloaded
Krypt95, a free encryption utility from Jack Mott who was then a student at
Rice University. The zip file is only 118KB. If you can find it
somewhere, it might be just what you are looking for.

Sony's drive, which costs a bit more than others, has some built-in
encryption capabilities, but I am not sure what they are. It may just
involve using XP to format the drive as NTFS and use XP file security. I
think most jump drives are formatted with some type of FAT system.

Hi Bob,

I keep a copy of the ABI-Coder encryption program on my thumb drive (1GB Soyo). If the computer I am transferring data onto
doesn't already have ABI-Coder installed on it I do the install. I handle sensitive data on a regular basis, and this has worked
well for me.

The one I have downloaded so long ago, does not require installation, which
is a reason it might be nice on a thumb drive or floppy. I'm guessing by
your email address that you are in North America. If so, I could email it
to you.

Best way is to buy a hardware encrypted flash drive -- that usually
doesn't require any software installed or run to work, and data stays
encrypted until you unlock it. Ones with thumbprint scanners exist.

Some require running of a software program that sits on the flash drive
to let you enter a password and unlock, but that requires program run
rights -- you may not have that on all PCs.

At the minimum, you can always WinZIP with AES encryption and make a
self-extracting archive?

Tried that WinZip will encrypt & prevent the file from being opened but the
file names are still there for all to see.

The easiest solution may be for you to purchase a JumpDrive Secure.

I don't like the size of the JumpDrive Secure. I reaaly thought this was
going to be a very easy question when I started the thread.

The question's easy, it's the answer that's difficult! <g>

It appears that your only solution might be to encrypt your
files before transferring them to your JumpDrive.

Did you TRY reformatting the drive with NTFS?

The office bought a Kingston drive for me and it had some application
that allowed you to partition the drive for a password/encrypted area.
I deleted it since it was a PITA to use but if you need it, you might
want to look at the Kingston drives.

Just out of curiosity, with your files AES encrypted, why are you
so concerned with file names? *No one's* gonna see them.

Pornography, maybe?

Clarification: No one's gonna see the file contents.
